Indiana Senate Honors Fallen EMS Heroes: A Step Toward Recognition and Remembrance

On March 27th, 2025, the Indiana Senate took an important step toward recognizing the sacrifices made by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals across the state. Led by Senator Fady Qaddoura of District 30, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution honoring Indiana's EMS providers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. This resolution represents a meaningful acknowledgment of the bravery, compassion, and dedication these men and women have shown in service to their communities.

During the Senate discussion, Senator Dr. Tyler Johnson of District 14 spoke passionately about the resilience, toughness, and sacrifice of EMS professionals. He highlighted the profound impact their work has—not only on themselves but also on their families—and emphasized that most Hoosiers may never fully understand the depth of what EMS providers do for their patients and communities every day.

Perhaps the most moving moment of the day was the presence of families who have personally experienced the ultimate sacrifice. Standing alongside Senator Qaddoura on the Senate floor were loved ones representing just a few of Indiana’s fallen EMS heroes:

  • Jeremy Hammer and spouse, honoring his father, Gerald Hammer, LaGrange County EMS, whose last call was January 31, 2014.

  • JoAnn Marvel, spouse of Mark Marvel, Seals Ambulance Service, whose last call was July 25, 2008.

  • Gretchen Weston, spouse of Wade Weston, AirEvac EMS, whose last mission was August 31, 2008.

  • Rob and Rosemary McCormick, parents of Timothy McCormick, Indianapolis EMS, whose last call was February 16, 2013.

These families stood not only for their loved ones but for every Indiana EMS provider who has given their life in service to others. Their presence was a powerful reminder of the human cost behind the uniforms and sirens. Each family carries memories of courage, compassion, and dedication—qualities that defined their loved ones’ lives and legacies.

The Indiana EMS Association continues to advocate for greater recognition of these sacrifices, including ongoing efforts to raise funds and secure the creation of an Indiana EMS Memorial. Such a memorial would serve as a lasting tribute, a place of reflection and remembrance, and a tangible acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by EMS providers and their families.

Yesterday’s resolution was an important milestone, but the work is far from finished. It is our collective responsibility as Hoosiers to honor these sacrifices, support these families, and educate our communities about the critical role EMS plays in our lives.

To Jeremy, JoAnn, Gretchen, Rob, Rosemary, and all families touched by the loss of an EMS professional: your loved ones are not forgotten. Their stories inspire us, their courage humbles us, and their sacrifices compel us to action. Thank you for sharing your memories and your strength. It was an honor to witness your loved ones’ legacies recognized by our Senate.

Together, let us ensure their sacrifices are forever remembered.
